chapter eight - look what you made me do

“Screw you, kid. There’s gotta be an explanation for all this.”

Maggie was more than ready for such a response. “Eventually it will all come back to you; unless it already has but you just can't accept it.”

“You're just a stupid little girl who likes to start shit. Now run along and go home to your mum,” said Zappitelli.

“Oh, you don’t believe me? Do you need proof? Of course you do, they always want proof. How shall we do this?”

“Okay, I'll play along,” said Artie. “No, I don’t need any proof. I think I’ll just go up to the front counter there and ask that nice librarian guy if he thinks I look dead.”

Artie got up from the cozy computer corner and walked over to the book check out lane.

“Sir?” said Artie. “Hi, that little obnoxious girl over there said that I’m dead. Could you kindly tell her that..”

Artie stopped short in mid-sentence. The late twenty-something year old, mousey looking library guy, was no longer standing there behind the counter. Something had startled the man enough to make him retreat rather promptly to the rear office.

“That was rude,” said Artie, as he began to walk back into the employees’ only area of the building. “Sir? I was talking to you. Just wanted to ask you if..”

Suddenly, Marvin the librarian emerged from out of the employee’s work area. Brandishing a broom he had grabbed from the breakroom, the book lord screamed like a wild Banshee as he charged after Artie. “AAAYYIEEEE!”

Now, swinging said sweeping utensil like a samurai sword, the book clerk charged toward Artie’s voice. With one impressive swing, the yellow handled broom careened straight toward Artie’s mullet-covered head; and then, passed right through it.

What the hell? thought Artie, who didn’t feel a thing. I thought for sure he had me..

By now, Maggie had come to the check out area as well. “He heard you but he couldn’t see you. Because you’re translucent. See..?”

“It can’t be.” Artie walked down the employee-only hallway and entered the restroom to see a long mirror mounted on the wall beside the door. Artie gazed into the glass, but no one gazed back. Oh my god. IT’S TRUE!

Artie returned to the public access area of the library and found Maggie. She followed him back into that cozy computer corner, where he sat and pondered for several minutes before finally saying “so, how did I die?”

Maggie prepared to tell the tale as Artie’s mind began to run wild. “I mean, I know I survived that car crash. Because I woke up in the hospital, and I heard someone say I was in a coma. But then..”

“Dude, you weren’t in a car crash. You were in a fire.”

“Huh?”

“At some night club. You were there for a concert when the fireworks caught the whole place ablaze. Some young woman pulled you out of there, and you did survive for a few days. But between your burns and all the toxins you inhaled, you did end up in a coma.
